Women’s Tennis: WTA Mallorca Open in Santa Ponsa

Fans of professional women’s tennis will see in Santa Ponsa some of the best female tennis players in action in during the next edition of the Pre-Wimbledon tournament. From 17th to 24th of June the WTA Mallorca Open takes place in Mallorca, perhaps the most expected top class sports event of the year. The so-called WTA Tour is a tournament series organized by the International Women’s Tennis Federation (WTA), which now encompasses worlwide more than 50 tournaments per year. Since 2016 Mallorca is hosting the WTA tournament. The prize money this year is around $ 250,000. Venue is the beautiful Santa Ponsa Tennis Club, which was built in 2015 for about 5 million Euro in front the Country Club. The Country Club Tennis Academy has a center court, five additional grass courts, seven clay courts and three hard courts, the quality is based on the Wimbledon model. Up to 3,000 visitors will attend the international women’s tennis tournament, and some will be lucky enough to enjoy the perfect vantage point from the roof of the modern clubhouse.

Mallorca Open

A tournament of the level of the Mallorca Open is a very important event for the Spanish tennis sport. Players can play in front of home audiences and ideally prepare for Wimbledon, the most important tournament of the year taking place at the end of June. Above all, it gives the young players the chance to play a professional tournament at a high level. Last year, Tatjana Maria won the 3rd WTA grass-root tournament Mallorca Open 2018. Germany’s athlete of the year 2018, Angelique Kerber, will be set again at the first place at the grass tournament in Santa Ponsa in 2019. In her debut the previous year in Mallorca she surprisingly failed in the first round. She still is thinking in a very positive way about the tournament, because she finally won Wimbledon. And of course, there also will be several Spanish top players.

Tournament director

Toni Nadal, the uncle of Rafa Nadal, will remain tournament director and is looking forward to the reigning Wimbledon winner. He sees her commitment as confirmation of the ideal conditions of the courses and the tournament in preparation for Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the year. The atmosphere is meant to be the highlight of the English tennis year – but the ambience of the venue is with the typical sandstone walls framing the squares, the magnificent landscaped gardens and endless sunshine and blue sky absolutely mallorquín. It’s easy to understand why the professionals are attracted to Mallorca: In June, the temperaturas are usually around 30 degrees and the rain probability tends to zero. Thus, the conditions on the island are much more pleasant than the English lawn tournaments in the run-up to Wimbledon. There is likely to be frequent rain breaks and cooler temperatures.

Lawn tennis in Mallorca, as shown in recent years, works. The tournament has established itself with players and fans. Of course not everything will be about tennis during the tournament week, in a wonderful atmosphere there will be a colorful supporting program with aprés parties, live music and lots of entertainment.
