Summer on Mallorca – Nocturnal Tomato Festival in Maria de la Salut
The Fira nocturna de la Tomàtiga de Ramellet, a fiesta in the evening in honor of the protected ‘Ramellet’ tomato, will take place on August 9th in Maria de la Salud. The event is all about the Mallorcan tomato and offers visitors as well a nice craft market as a variety of gastronomic specialities and, above all, a great village festival.
The Ramellet tomatoes are traditionally hanging in many Mallorcan houses on the shady roof beams. When threaded, the Ramallet variant stays fresh for months, it looks nice and pressure marks are avoided. The shell is a bit thicker, you use this really tomato-tasting tomato especially for the most typical Mallorcan meal – the pa amb oli …
In this case, the tomato is sliced open and its pulp is spread on a crispy roasted slice of Mallorcan bread. With or without garlic, preferably with plenty of olive oil. Combined with cheese, jamon serrano, Sobrassada – depending on your taste. A very typical Mallorcan dish, easy and quick to prepare, extremely tasty and part of the very healthy Mediterranean diet.
Last year, a string of twined tomatoes of 20 meters in length, weighing 180 kilograms, was the main attraction of the village square. Also this year the villagers will be back in the market square to show how to prepare these tasty fruits so that you can enjoy the taste of the Mediterranean throughout the year.
A beautiful arts and crafts market, music and a variety of gastronomic specialities complete this nice, local festival.
